Princess Academy

THE PRINCESS ACADEMY: Shannon Hale: Bloomsbury Children's Books: Young Adult: 314 pgs.

Miri is a fourteen-year old girl who is forced to attend an academy with nineteen other girls from her mountain village. There they are to learn how to be princesses because the prince is supposed to pick one of them for his bride. Faced with unfair punishments, grueling school work, and ostracizing from the other girls, Miri must learn to find strength within herself. While finding that strength and learning how to be a princess, she also gains new skills and talents that could help her village. But little did she expect that this knowledge might help save her life!

I enjoyed this book, especially some of the little lessons that are scattered throughout. I really identified with Miri, who longs for love and acceptance while trying to decide what she truly wants in her life. Hale gives her flaws and weaknesses, which makes her more endearing and believable. An enjoyable read for any age.
