Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus

Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus
By Orson Scott Card
TOR, 1996. 402 pgs. Sci-Fi

This fascinating story really surprised me. It begins in the 23rd century when mankind has essentially destroyed itself. It is widely believed that mankind is making a comeback (or perhaps just holding it's own) after nearly annihilating itself; however, this is incorrect and only a handful of scientists know the truth--that they are irreversibly doomed to extinction. Unless...they are capable of altering the past. To make the shift they believe is necessary they send three individuals back in time. Each has a different set of tasks, but individually or collectively they must somehow prevent Columbus' discovery of the new world and delay the subsequent colonization by Europeans. Interesting plot line with well-developed characters.
