Evernight

EVERNIGHT: Claudia Gray: HarperTeen: 2008: Young Adult Fiction: 327 pages

Bianca has grudgingly moved with her teacher parents to the Gothic style Evernight Academy boarding school. There she is accepted but doesn’t feel like she fits in with the sleek, privileged rich kids. However, new to the school this year are a few scholarship students including handsome Lucas. Bianca is drawn to Lucas even though he doesn’t seem to want to make friends with anyone. Their friendship continues to develop, but is interrupted by dark secrets that forces Bianca to question everything she’s ever been taught.

If you’re looking for something similar to the Twilight books, then I would recommend reading this book. However, I found the story a little boring and the characters not all that likable.

I like the idea of having vampires in a private elite boarding school setting. Somehow it just fits. Wouldn't it make sense to find out those horrible kids from high school really were soulless blood sucking vampires? However, the idea has been done before, and better. This is similar to Melissa de la Cruz's Blue Bloods series without the heavy handed mythology, and in a country setting instead of urban. There is some disconnect in the plot about Bianca's discovery of her powers. The author tries to set up a Romeo and Juliet type love story with Bianca and Lucas but the tension and tragedy is just not there. I liked some aspects of this book but would recommend Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy books instead for a darker, edgier read.
