Troost is known for his hilarious adventures in far flung places and goes where most of us would never dare. Troost’s exploration of China from Shanghai to Tibet is an entertaining and readable introduction to almost everything Chinese. This is not a book of travel tips but there is plenty of “fair warning” here about the difficulties of travel in China. The telling is often earthy, but then so is China.

I just read this and thoroughly enjoyed it, although it left me slightly terrified of both China and global pollution.
