This World We Live In

This World We Live In
By Susan Beth Pfeffer
Harcourt, 2010. 239 pgs. Young Adult
It's been a year since a meteor collided with the moon, catastrophically altering the earth’s climate. For Miranda Evans life as she knew it no longer exists. Her friends and neighbors are dead, the landscape is frozen, and food is increasingly scarce.

The struggle to survive intensifies when Miranda’s father and stepmother arrive with a baby and three strangers in tow. One of the newcomers is Alex Morales, and as Miranda’s complicated feelings for him turn to love, his plans for his future thwart their relationship. Then a devastating tornado hits the town of Howell, and Miranda makes a decision that will change their lives forever.

I enjoyed seeing the characters from Life as We Knew It and The Dead and the Gone come together in this book. I was interested to see how the author would pull together these two stories. I liked this book and it didn’t feel as dark as The Dead and the Gone, but my favorite in this “series” is Life as We Knew It.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the previous two books in this series.

I found this book to be pretty disappointing. Miranda and Matt's characters were really off, and the plot wasn't very compelling.

I was likewise disappointed in this sequel--I enjoyed both of the earlier stories and expected something more from this one. I noticed that this story seems to be all through Miranda's eyes. Since The Dead and Gone was through Alex's eyes I expected this story to have more of his perspective. The ending simply leaves the reader hanging.
