Lirael is a daughter of the Clayr, but has not yet received "the Sight"--an ability to glimpse possible futures. Lirael is disappointed that she has not received "the Sight" and doesn't feel like a true daughter of the Clayr. Most all the Clayr are women and live beneath a mountain at the northernmost tip of the Northern Kingdom. Of course, Lirael is no ordinary member of the Clayr and she is destined to save both the Old and New Kingdoms from destruction.
This is a tale nicely told with interesting characters, some nice plot developments, and a bit of humor that kept me so engaged in the story that I was loath to put it down. Lirael is a smart, talented, and fearless character. This book is part two of a trilogy bookended by Sabriel and Abhorsen.
