Most of the time this math works quietly behind the scenes . . . until it doesn’t. Exploring and explaining a litany of glitches, near misses, and mathematical mishaps involving the internet, big data, elections, street signs, lotteries, the Roman Empire, and an Olympic team, Matt Parker uncovers the bizarre ways math trips us up, and what this reveals about its essential place in our world. Getting it wrong has never been more fun! 

You might not think that comedy and mathematics are topics that work well together, but this book pulls it off! Parker has a very dry sense of humor, one that I found delightfully entertaining even when discussing topics like standardized calendaring systems and financial algorithms. In addition to this, while largely an entertaining read, it is very technical at times! This may be a plus for any reader eager to learn obscure specifics about the functions of coding, mathematics, mechanics, and more. There were some segments that I found difficult to follow the logic of, but this book is formatted as a series of short stories and segments, so if one segment is too challenging (or perhaps simply not in the interest of the reader) it is easy to skip to the next without any impact on the reading experience.

In the 1930s, Germany was a hotbed of scientific thought. But after the Nazis took power, Jewish and female citizens were forced out of their academic positions. Hedwig Kohn, Lise Meitner, Hertha Sponer, and Hildegard Stücklen were eminent in their fields, but they had no choice but to flee due to their Jewish ancestry or anti-Nazi sentiments. Their harrowing journey out of Germany became a life-and-death situation that required herculean efforts of friends and other prominent scientists. No matter their destination, each woman revolutionized the field of physics when all odds were stacked against them, galvanizing young women to do the same.

This book was a fascinating combination of some of my favorite types of nonfiction: it's a history book, an approachable science book, and the stories of real-life people all rolled into one. The combination of subjects gave me a new perspective on European history of the 1930s and 1940s, and helped me see how the rise of Nazism affected both the lives of real-life people, and the fate of scientific study. Those who enjoy well-told histories and biographies will find a lot to appreciate in this book.

After a few billion years of bearing witness to life on Earth, of watching one hundred billion humans go about their day-to-day lives, of feeling unbelievably lonely, and of hearing its own story told by others, the Milky Way would like a chance to speak for itself. All one hundred billion stars and fifty undecillion tons of gas of it. It all began some thirteen billion years ago, when clouds of gas scattered through the universe's primordial plasma just could not keep their metaphorical hands off each other. They succumbed to their gravitational attraction, and the galaxy we know as the Milky Way was born. Since then, the galaxy has watched as dark energy pushed away its first friends, as humans mythologized its name and purpose, and as galactic archaeologists have worked to determine its true age (rude). The Milky Way has absorbed supermassive (an actual technical term) black holes, made enemies of a few galactic neighbors, and mourned the deaths of countless stars. After all this time, the Milky Way finally feels that it's amassed enough experience for the juicy tell-all we've all been waiting for.

I have two very bad habits. First, I buy nonfiction books about science and lose the motivation to read them. Second, when I happen to read anything science related I just skip right over the numbers regardless of how important they are. This book fixed both problems. McTier presents scientific concepts in an accessible voice that allows even the most inexperienced science-lovers to engage with new concepts and ideas. I love the blend of artful storytelling and hard science. The voice of the Milky Way is unique, funny, and extremely endearing. I would recommend this book to anybody that's new to astronomy and everyone that supports STEAM over STEM.

In the hands of the award-winning writer Mark Schultz, Bloort's predicament becomes the means of giving even the most science-phobic reader a complete introduction to the history and science of genetics that's as easy to understand as it is entertaining to read.

What's Gotten Into You?

From the Big Bang to the creation of our Earth, and through the gradual evolution of organic matter to the state of our planet today, Dan Levitt writes an accessible history of how the building blocks that make us came to be. In the process, Levitt discusses ideas from astrophysics, geology, chemistry, botany, biology, and more.

This book takes on the big task of summarizing a variety of ideas ranging across a variety of scientific pursuits, all to answer the question: What are our foundational elements, and how do they work together? This is also one of the most accessible versions of this type of book that I've read. What I especially appreciated was that Levitt tackles the questions of not just how the elements that make up our bodies were formed (which many popular astrophysics books tackle), but also how they combined and evolved over time to create sustainable life. For that reason, the chapters on the discovery of photosynthesis, and how cells came to be, were the most interesting chapters to me. I also appreciated the stories of the scientists whose work led to what we understand about our world today. This is a great introduction to scientific principles that will appeal to anyone curious about the science behind the origin of life.

Harry Cliff's deep understanding of particle physics shows in the way he can summarize complex theories so that anyone can understand them.  Part science lesson, part history lesson, and part travelogue, the thing I liked best about this book was Cliff's obvious love of physics, shown in the way he stops to marvel at life-changing ideas, or at the sight of the Milky Way on a particularly clear night.  I also appreciated that Cliff doesn't get too bogged down in the details; he uses relatable (and sometimes humorous) examples that kept me intrigued, and helped me follow along with the complex ideas he was explaining.  I am now closer to understanding what a Higgs boson is than I've ever been before.
